Area Studies

The Center for Southeast Asian Studies was formally established in 1973 but scholarly interest in Southeast Asia developed much earlier on campus, about 50 years ago. The Center has been a National Resource Center, funded by the U.S. Department of Education since 1981, operating a vigorous and well-developed program committed to the study of Southeast Asia that is recognized as one of the best worldwide. The Center is a program within the International Institute, an initiative of International Studies and the College of Letters and Science.
